Spice up your meal time with this very hungry caterpillar charcuterie board idea! I love the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle! Its a cute story about a little caterpillar who is eating his way through some leaves, but the leaves aren’t enough. Soon, the little caterpillar finds himself eating his way through lots of fruit as well as other foods such as salami, pickles, and a muffin.
In the end, the little caterpillar is full from his eating adventures. He nestles down on a leaf, spins a cocoon around himself, and falls asleep. When he wakes up, he is a beautiful butterfly!
If you haven’t read this book before, you should definitely grab a copy to read with your little ones.
Are you looking for a fun and simple summer activity? Why not recreate the caterpillar’s lunch! Let me show you this fun and simple charcuterie board that I put together based on the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
There is a lot of food mentioned in this book, so I focused on the fruit and some of the other simpler food items. Here are the foods I used to put together my board.
First, I washed all of the fruit and cut them into long slices. Next, I gathered my pepperoni, muffins, pickles, and cut my round cheese slices into smaller square-ish pieces.
To assemble, I simply placed each food item into a row down the board, and on either side I places two muffins. I am not a charcuterie expert so I am sure that there are a million other board designs that would better represent this cute book. Play around with it and see what you get!
A Versatile Idea
Now, I understand that summer can be hectic for mamas and the thought of putting time and energy into a beautiful charcuterie board only to be descended on by hungry children, does not sound appealing.
However, I am hear to tell you that a fun, engaging, book-themed activity does not have to be complicated. Do what works for you! If you want to take all of the fruit, throw it on a cutting board, and place it on the table for your children to pick at, go for it!
If you would rather just lay out the food in bowls or on plates on the counter, that works too! Or, you could get a roll of butcher paper, cover your table with it, lay all of the food in the center of the table, and tell your kiddos to have at it!
The point of a fun activity is FUN! Fun for all parties! Spice up your usual summer lunch time routine by reading a book, adding a few new foods, and telling the kids they are eating the same lunch as the very hungry caterpillar.
Trust me! They will love this very hungry caterpillar charcuterie board! And I hope you will too!
