Book-Themed Decorating

A Cozy, Literature-Themed Room

Do you have an empty room in your house that you don’t know what to do with? Why not turn it into a cozy literature-themed room! Take the best elements from your favorite books and turn it into your dream room.

That’s what I did, and now it is my favorite room in the house! Here is my story.

My Childhood Inspiration

Ever since I was a little girl, I have loved Anne of Green Gables. I don’t know if I just found Anne a creative and relatable character, or it was just a sweet story of a simpler time. I used to float around the house and pretend that I was Anne with an imagination filled with timeless books.

What do I want?

Fast forward to this year when my husband and I bought a sweet cottage style home. It has green shutters, scalloped siding on the eaves, and a porch big enough for a porch swing.

As we began to put our new home together, I was stumped by the guest room. I had never had a guest room that wasn’t a hodge podge of random furniture that didn’t fit in the rest of the house. This time, I wanted to create a space that was cohesive and cozy for my many house guests.

Putting It All Together

I knew I wanted a cottage-style bedroom, so I started with a bead board accent wall with a small photo shelf. I collected various vintage frames from a local rummage sale and layered them along the shelf along with some dried lavender. A large oval mirror on the wall reflects the sunlight from the window and lights up the room.

I placed the brushed-bronze metal bed frame in front of the accent wall, adorned with a cozy comforter and plushy pillows. A cream, ceramic lamp gives the room a warm glow in the evening times, and a hand-carved rocker sits in the corner, waiting for the next weary traveler. The final treasure that brought this room together was a vintage pie cabinet that houses towels, blankets, and books for our guests.

When the room was finished, I stepped back and admired my work . . . but something was missing. The frames were empty. I knew I wanted some sort of paintings, but I didn’t know what kind of paintings to looks for.

The Final Touch

Then I remembered my favorite book . . . Anne of Green Gables. I found simple paintings of Anne and placed them in my frames along the ledge. Once these frames were filled, my Anne of Green Gables guest room was complete. Now I like to curl up on the bed with a blanket, a cup of coffee, and read my vintage copy of Anne of Green Gables.
