A Book-Themed Party: Because of Winn-Dixie

In my home growing up, my mom was ALWAYS looking for a reason to throw a little family party. The first day of spring, Cinco de Mayo, the day we get our braces off, you name it, we probably had a party for it! I loved this tradition growing up, and as a result, I am always on the look out for party ideas.

When I was reading Because of Winn-Dixie to prepare my novel study, I was pleasantly surprised when the author, Kate DiCamillo, vividly described a beautiful, simple party put together by the main character, Opal. As I read this scene, I thought, “I could do this! I could create my own Winn-Dixie party!” And today, I am doing just that. I am throwing a Winn-Dixie party inspired by the book.

Party Decorations

In chapter twenty-one, Opal describes how Gloria and she begin to decorate. They use simple supplies such as crepe paper streamers, paper bags filled with sand and a candle, and later, Sweetie Pie brings pictures of dogs cut from magazines which she taped to every surface at the party.

The last thing we did was decorate the yard all up. I strung pink and orange and yellow crepe paper in the trees to make it look fancy.

We also filled up paper bags with sand and put candles in them . . .

Sweetie Pie had a whole handful of pictures of dogs that she had cut out of magazines. “It’s to help you with your theme,” she said. “You can use them to decorate. I brung tape, too.”

Party Menu

In the book, Opal decides that she wants egg salad sandwiches at her party. Gloria adds to the menu by teaching Opal how to make her world famous Dump Punch. Later, Otis brings large jar of pickles to complete the meal. Of course, these parts of the book finalized the menu for my Winn-Dixie party. If egg salad sandwiches are not your thing, consider having Winn-Dixie’s favorite peanut butter sandwiches instead while still staying on theme.

Dump Punch

4 cups Orange Juice

4 cups Grapefruit Juice

2 Liter Sprite

In the book, Miss Franny Block brings a big bowl of Littmus Lozenges. Unfortunately, these candies don’t exist, so I picked up some butterscotch hard candies instead. Any hard candy of your choice will do.

To tie it all together, I added my Winn-Dixie Party Printable Banner. This final touch made the whole whole party set up make sense. And now? Our Winn-Dixie party is complete!

Ready to enjoy a Winn-Dixie party!

When you finish reading Because of Winn-Dixie with your children or your students, I hope that you consider celebrating this accomplishment with an official Winn-Dixie party!

Happy partying!
